Overview

Jade and Lunaliya have a very vague relationship that's difficult to put into words. It isn't that their relationship is complicated by any means, but there's a lot of nuance behind it. They act too friendly and comfortable with one another to just be called friends, but there are no romantic feelings involved, and at the same time, they're too separated from one another to think of the other in a fully familial sense. They're "more than just friends" but are also "exactly just that" at the same time.

Both Jade and Lunaliya don't really know what to call their relationship. They refer to themselves as "friends" to save themselves time from having to explain their vague relationship to others, but they find the term to be lacking to accurately portray what their relationship actually is. That being said, the two are perfectly content with what they currently have and don't find it necessary to put a name to it.

Dynamic

In Public

They have a much more "subdued" dynamic in public than they are in private. They act formal and polite as they usually do, and they have the occasional quips; however, that's all there is. They appear to be on friendly terms to most people, but because the two of them are the kind of people who don't show their true thoughts on their face, and due to their more formal/ polite countenance, it sometimes feels like the two of them are more like amicable business partners than anything else to those who aren't fully familiar with them and their relationship.

In Private

Since Lunaliya doesn't have to worry about how she appears when alone with Jade (as he already knows what she's like in private), she falls for his provocations and tends to lash out at him or otherwise get embarrassed more due to his teasing. As such, he tends to have much more fun when alone with her (with or without other close friends) and ends up smiling/ laughing more than usual. The two of them become much more carefree, and their quips have much more "bite" to them (especially on Lunaliya's side), but they know that there's never any ill intent behind their words and teasing jabs.

Story

First Encounter

They first encountered each other near the end of Book 1. Lunaliya was in the school infirmary due to an accident she had during flight lessons with Grim. While she was recovering, Riddle also came to the infirmary with Jade accompanying him due to a mishap during their class. Jade and Lunaliya didn't exchange that many words with each other as Jade left to head back to class. Their interaction was too short to form any kind of impression of each other.

Second Encounter

Their second encounter was during Book 2 (Chapter 11), in which Lunaliya and a few students of Heartslabyul went around campus to gather information about Spelldrive players who were being targeted/ getting injured. Lunaliya was briefly given a rundown of the Leech twins from Riddle before the twins noticed them and started to give chase. At this time, Lunaliya could only think about how intimidating the Leech twins were (being suddenly chased by two very tall men would intimidate anyone, she believed).

Getting to Know Each Other

Between the end of Book 3 and before the start of Book 4, Jade approached Lunaliya with a favour. Wary, she refused and tried to excuse herself, but he kept on bugging her until she conceded. He wanted to test a potion he made and chose Lunaliya as his subject. When asked why, Jade answered that it was because he wanted to get to know her better after "getting off on the wrong foot" after the events of Book 3. Figuring it would just be faster to get it done and over with, Lunaliya accepted.

The potion was something similar to a truth serum. It meant to lessen one's inhibitions, thus making them more prone to saying what was on their mind. The more they tried to resist it, the stronger the effects. Of course, Jade didn't tell Lunaliya any of this—only that the potion was harmless and have no physical effects on the body.

"So, how do you feel?"

"No different than usual, I suppose."

"..."

"..."

"I see. Perhaps the potion was a failure then."

"So it was a total waste of my time? Great. Thanks for nothing, I guess."

"?"

"Wait, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that out loud."

"Oya? How fascinating. I didn't think you were capable of speaking in such a tone."

"Because if I did, I'd have people hating me and beating my ass, and I'd rather live a peaceful life. ...Oh my fucking god, Jade Leech, you insufferable piece of shit. What the fucking hell was that potion? No, wait, stop. Sorry. I didn't mean to swear. It just came out."

"Fufu. I suggest not fighting it. It'll just make it worse. So these are your inner thoughts, hm? I must say, you hide them rather well."

"You bastard..."

"And such colourful language! Who would have known that the ever reliable prefect used such words so naturally?"

Because of the potion, Jade would learn that Lunaliya was someone who had a lot to say but preferred not to say anything, thus changing his view of her very quickly. Hoping to see more sides of her that she usually kept hidden, Jade would constantly trail Lunaliya and bug her, much to her chagrin. Somewhere along the way, they became more comfortable around one another and became friends.

Jade's Crush

At some point in their friendship, Jade noticed that his feelings of intrigue and fascination towards Lunaliya shifted. He liked her and wanted to spend more time with her, and he was quick to realize that his feelings were more romantic in nature. He tried to get a feel for how Lunaliya felt about him, and he realized that she would never see him in that way.

For a while, Jade was left feeling upset. He didn't want to burden Lunaliya with these feelings and make things awkward for them, so he chose to bury them instead. Eventually, he got over it and figured it was for the best like this for both of their sakes. He would later be grateful that his feelings were nothing more than a puppy crush and that nothing further came from it.

Appellations

Jade

Prior to becoming friends, Jade called Lunaliya by her last name, [TBD (I'm still undecided on her last name lol)], and used the honorific '-san'. He eventually switched to calling her by her first name, Lunaliya, but maintained the '-san' honorific. Lunaliya commented on this, and Jade asked if it made her uncomfortable to refer to her by her first name, to which she replied it didn't particularly matter to her and that she was just pointing it out.

At the current point of their relationship, Jade calls Lunaliya by the nickname, Liya, and has dropped all honorifics. The first time he called Lunaliya as such, it surprised her, and she said that it would take some time to get used to but didn't necessarily find it unpleasant. Since then, Jade has exclusively called and referred to Lunaliya by this nickname. The only time he would refer to her by her proper name was if he was talking to someone who was unacquainted with her.

Most of the time, Jade teases Lunaliya by calling her "my lady" or "princess" (with the honorific '-sama') both in public and private, much to her chagrin and embarrassment. Despite her constantly asking him to stop, Jade knows that she secretly enjoys being called that, so he continues to do so.

Lunaliya

Prior to becoming friends, Lunaliya called Jade by his last name, Leech, and awkwardly used the honorific '-senpai'. The only time she would call him by his first name rather than last was to differentiate between him and his twin brother, Floyd. After becoming more acquainted with each other (but not necessarily enough to consider themselves friends), Lunaliya switched to using the honorific '-san'.

At the current point of their relationship, Lunaliya calls Jade simply by his first name and has dropped all honorifics after his insistence that she does so.

Whenever she's referring to him with his twin brother, she'll call him "the sly and cunning one of the tweels." If she's extremely upset at Jade, she will call him by his full name (ex. "Do not push my patience, Jade Leech"), and that's usually an indication to him that he should stop and apologize lest he wish to ruin their relationship.

Thoughts

Jade

Initially, Jade thought of Lunaliya as "a dull human" but quickly changed his opinion of her. He was quick to notice that she was almost always present, if not at the very center of whenever something interesting happened. He didn't think it was intentional on her part, but it made him curious nevertheless, and he would keep his eyes on her, or else he might miss out on something fun.

At some point, Jade developed a crush on Lunaliya but soon realized that she would never return his feelings due to their age difference and how she saw most of Night Raven College's students as "just kids", himself included. For a while, he lamented why he couldn't have been born earlier, but he soon gave up on those feelings and laid them to rest when he realized the futility of the situation. Instead, he decided to cherish the friendship he had with Lunaliya. He never told Lunaliya about these feelings he once held for her, but every time he looks back on it, he can't help but laugh because he now finds the idea of any kind of romance with her to be utterly ridiculous since he finds their current friendship to be "the best thing."

Jade considers Lunaliya to be a good influence on Floyd and appreciates that his brother is able to have so much fun with her around. He thinks of her as a very lovely person who doesn't realize her own worth, and he wants to change that. He once thought of her as being "too kind", but after discovering her pettiness and sarcastic remarks that she usually kept to herself, he changed his opinion of her to be someone scarily patient and who knew how to hold her tongue.

Despite finding her an interesting person, Jade considers Lunaliya to be "very weak" (and is unafraid to be blunt with her about it) which brings out a more protective side of himself towards her. Having lived in the Coral Sea where danger lurks around every corner, he's used to fending only for himself, so he finds it refreshing to try to look out for someone else instead, and as such, he finds Lunaliya to be a "refreshing" person overall.

He wants Lunaliya to be more confident and selfish, and he's usually encouraging her to be as such. He doesn't like the fact that she's always holding herself back, and he often tries to get her to act impulsively and/ or based on her emotions, whether good or bad. He just wants her to be able to get what she wants and be happy, even if it might bring misfortune or otherwise inconvenience other people. Those people don't matter to him, but she does.

Lunaliya

When Lunaliya first met Jade, the lasting impression she had of him was "wow, his haircut is really ugly" which she laughs about every time she remembers it. After becoming more familiar with him in Book 3, she considered him to be an extremely large jerk, but she was so impressed by how he always acted with such class that she could never get truly angry at him. Sure enough, she found him annoying to deal with, but she also found his mannerisms to be really funny and was actually in awe of how elegant he was while still managing to make the people around him angry. It almost made her want to be a bit more like him: confident and classy.

After becoming allies of sorts in Book 4, Lunaliya was grateful and realized that she would never want to go against Jade and/ or have him as an enemy again (like in Book 3). She still thought of him as a bit of a jerk, but because she wasn't on the receiving end of his hidden insults and actions this time, she almost found him rather endearing.

That being said, she does find Jade to be a bit overwhelming and considers him to be one of the most dangerous things around campus. He's sly and cunning, and she can never tell what he's truly thinking behind his smile. She knows him to be an untrustworthy person and only act in a way that's most amusing to him, but ironically, it's because of that very reason that she can bring herself to trust him to always behave that way no matter what.

Because of the way Jade carries himself, Lunaliya finds Jade to be a surprisingly relaxing person to be around. To her, he's someone who's almost always calm, composed, and rational. As such, she often seeks him out whenever she's stressed.

Gifts

Jade

Jade will sometimes give gifts to Lunaliya if there's something she especially wants or needs. He won't actively go out of his way to look for gifts for her unless there's a special occasion (like her birthday), but if he happens to find something in passing, he'll buy it to give to her later. Most of the time, he buys Lunaliya gifts that she could use such as clothes, accessories, stationary, etc. His gifts tend to be on the more expensive side of things, but he's usually able to get them at discounted/ lower prices by certain means which he never discloses. That being said, Jade has no qualms in spending money for Lunaliya, no matter how large or small the amount.

Some gifts he's given her are:

Jade's Japanese herbariums that he gifted to Lunaliya (photo src)

Lunaliya's favourite gifts from him are the Japanese herbariums, preserved flowers, and accessories he's made himself. Like the preserved flowers, some of the necklaces and bracelets that he's gifted Lunaliya were made with flowers he's picked up during his hikes in the Mountain Lovers Club. Lunaliya loves flowers and finds them very pretty, so she's very fond of those particular gifts. She keeps the preserved flowers and Japanese herbariums on display in her room.

Sometimes Jade will give Lunaliya "joke" gifts such as mushrooms and eel-themed merchandise just to see her reaction. That said, she always accepts said joke gifts and still makes use of them. Jade once got Lunaliya a shirt with a silly eel print and was surprised to see her wearing it while lounging around at Ramshackle Dorm.

Lunaliya

Lunaliya's love language is gift giving, but as much as she would like to give Jade gifts, she doesn't have the means to. As such, her gifts towards him tend to be more handmade and typically hold more sentimental value. She doesn't give him gifts as often as he does her, but that's mostly because she hesitates on what to give him.

Some gifts she's given him are:

Jade's favourite gifts from her are the art supplies. When he told her that he started doing field sketches, she gifted him art supplies in turn. Perhaps it was because she was an artist (albeit an amateur one) herself, but she knew what kind of art supplies were of good quality and had enough insight to give him the kind of supplies that were good and useful for the kind of art he did.

Jade is always surprised by the amount of thought and consideration Lunaliya puts into her gifts. He's used to people giving him and his brother all kinds of luxurious gifts that they don't particularly care for (src), so it always warms his heart that the gifts Lunaliya gives him are fully with him and his interests in mind.

How They Fight and Make Up

Most of the time, it's Lunaliya getting angry at Jade and then storming off, but there are rare instances in which they'll argue with one another. Jade maintains a calm and composed expression, but one can tell that he's annoyed because his words have a sharper tone to them. Lunaliya, on the other hand, is much more expressive in her frustration, huffing and sighing in annoyance.

Lunaliya is usually the first to drop the argument, thinking to herself that she's the adult in this situation and has to act as such. She would remove herself from the situation and go off to cool her head. She would remain stubborn and petty, however, and more often than not, refuse to apologize first. She's a busy woman often getting dragged around in the other students' shenanigans, so she would use that as an excuse to avoid him.

Jade, on the other hand, would be bothered by their argument. It wouldn't bother him at first, but as the days pass by, he starts to realize that he misses his banters with Lunaliya and finds his days to be boring without her. He has no qualms in swallowing his pride to approach her to apologize. When he apologizes, he doesn't sound particularly apologetic, but Lunaliya can see in his eyes when he's being sincere.

Since Lunaliya likes gifts, Jade would often give her a small gift as a way of appeasing her. That usually makes Lunaliya soften up towards him and apologizes herself for getting too heated and stubborn. They quickly fall back to their usual pace, and there's never any awkward air around them after making up with one another.

Public Opinion

Most of the students and staff at Night Raven College don't know what to call Jade and Lunaliya's relationship. Sometimes they seem like good friends, and other times, they feel more like family. People see their relationship as something vague, and if anybody asked what they thought Lunaliya's and Jade's relationship was, they would hesitantly answer "really good friends" with an undeniable uncertain tone.

Floyd Leech

Floyd thinks that Jade and Lunaliya have a good relationship, and he's happy for his brother to have found somebody he can trust, confide in, and have fun with that wasn't just Floyd himself. Floyd hopes that their relationship lasts forever so that his brother can remain happy forever. That said, Floyd does get a bit envious whenever the two are having fun without him and often forces his way into joining them (not that either of the two particularly mind his additional company)

Azul Ashengrotto

Azul considers Jade and Lunaliya to be a dangerous pair. They're not as dangerous as Floyd and Jade together, but Azul has seen what Jade and Lunaliya can do when they team up, and he wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of their ire. That said, Azul considers both of them to be very competent, and their relationship is to his benefit as they can get a lot done when working together, so he's more than happy to see them together.

Riddle Rosehearts

Riddle is absolutely baffled by how well Jade and Lunaliya get along with each another. He knows Jade to be someone very sly and Lunaliya to be someone very kind (unaware of her more petty side), so he doesn't understand how they can work together so seamlessly. He considers the two of them to be a very strange and mismatched pair, but he does think that Jade's company is a good thing for Lunaliya as she's usually smiling and laughing more whenever he's involved.
